I apologize for not posting yesterday; there were extenuating circumstances involving Time Warner and other factors. I hope everyone had a good weekend and a good Monday!
Tonight you have the opportunity to check out a truly hipster-y event at the most hipster-y venue I know- Zebulon. I first described the space some time ago. Evil Horns’ Noir and Not Waving But Drowning will have a free multimedia spectacle tonight:
Smack in the middle of their theater run providing dark sounds for the Noir show at the Voorhees theater, the Evil Horns perform music that sounds like if Angelo Badalamenti and Cecil Taylor met Tom Waits in a dimly lit back alley. With black and white 40s style projections by Linsey Bostwick and Cory Einbinder, and burlesque by Darlinda Just Darlinda, followed by the amazing Not Waving But Drowning playing timeless music on mandolin, Stroh violin, viola, lute, bass fiddles, and percussive devices.
Today is the first day to check out the new installation on top of the Met. Roxy Paine’s Maelstrom is all set up against the dramatic backdrop of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan- be the first to experience the rooftop this summer!

If all this nice weather has put you in the mood to embrace earth-friendly wares you should check out Nimli’s pop-up store, where you can find everything from home décor, beauty products and jewelry to clothes for men, women and kids- all eco-friendly!
Also tonight, you can embrace your inner 50s housewife (you know she’s in there longing to throw dinner parties and wear cute little dresses, ok, well, maybe she’s not in everyone) at the KGB Bar where the editor of the new anthology “Dirt: The Quirks, Habits, and Passions of Keeping House” and some of the contributing authors will be discussing all things housewife-y.
Wednesday night check out Heeb Storytelling at Joe’s Pub:
Heeb Magazine’s critically acclaimed Storytelling series returns to New York City for a night of irreverent storytelling: seven-minute tales by actor Nathan Phillips, comedian Jenny Rubin, writer Amy Sohn, musician Robin Gelfenbien and others. Hosted by comedian Hannibal Buress!
On Thursday there’s a great line-up at the Mercury Lounge– Bryan Dunn, Wakey! Wakey! and Casey Shea. Now you know how I feel about the Mercury Lounge, but I think Wakey! Wakey! might be worth putting up with the troll.
Also on Thursday you can be the first to experience the insanity that is XRay NYC:
Billed as an over-the-top Big-Top and an Eclectic Cabaret, XRay will feature a wild mix of elements: DJs, go-go dancers, burlesque, performance art, spoken-word, short videos, magic, and live music (with an electronic edge).

I have one addition for tonight and a couple of events taking place on Thursday that I’d like to mention.
Tonight at the KGB Bar the Nonfiction Series Presents Mickey Hess and Ben Greenman:
Mickey Hess is the author of Big Wheel at the Cracker Factory, Is Hip Hop Dead? and Icons of Hip Hop. He is an English professor at Rider University.
Ben Greenman is an editor at the New Yorker and the author of several acclaimed books of fiction, including Superbad, Superworse, and A Circle is a Balloon and Compass Both: Stories About Human Love. His fiction, essays, and journalism have appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Paris Review, Zoetrope: All Story, McSweeneys, and Opium, and he has been widely anthologized.
If you’re still not sure if Hip Hop is dead after the show you can buy Mickey Hess a Russian beer and hope he’ll pontificate further.
On Thursday Dan Teicher and The Vices and Vines String Quartet will be performing at the Bitter End.

Thursday is also opening night for the Abraxas Stage Company, which is presenting a new musical called Crazy Head Space at the Seaport Theater :
Crazy Head Space offers a riveting, wild score by contemporary composers Liz S. Davis and Michelangelo Sosnowitz, and a gloriously insane lyric book by Liz S. Davis. Taking inspiration from the (in)famous DSM IV Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, this musical will leave you wishing for a disorder of your own!

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you’re as excited as I am that it’s 55 degrees this afternoon! Enjoy it because I hear the weekend is going to be wet and cold.

If you’re in the mood for more old-school hi-jinks this evening the City Reliquary Museum and Civic Organization is having a ‘Modern-Day Depression Era Benefit‘ complete with Depression-era movies (ie. The Marx Bros), a DIY fingerless gloves station, landlords to throw pies at (?!) and of course Harlem Jazz.

Saturday afternoon check out the pop-up market ‘Funky Child‘ at Alphabeta. There will be music and artwork spanning the range from awesome to really really weird. Enjoy the madness!

Saturday evening if you’ve never spent an evening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art you should go this weekend. There’s something magical about being in the Great Hall after the sun has set, with music being played on the balcony and the tourists mostly gone. For an added bonus Saturday evening check out the free Gallery Talk on the Egyptian version of the good life:

Saturday night enjoy the nu-jazz sound of the lovely young musician Monet for free at BAM.

Sunday is the last day to register for next week’s ‘Swamp Cabbage Wild Game Tasting Fundraiser,’ which you really won’t want to miss. ‘Swamp Cabbage, a Dark and Sweaty Documentary’ directed by Hayley Downs and Julie Kahn gives us a unique look at Florida Cracker culture. It involves coleslaw wrestling, among other things. You have to see it, just go.

But to get back to this Sunday… If you haven’t been to the KGB Bar for their Sunday Night Fiction series this is a good night to go; Daphne Uviller and Eric Kraft will be reading from their respective novels while you sip on Russian beer.

President’s Day weekend is now upon us and those of us who have off on Monday have lots of options for how to spend our 3 days of freedom. Here are the ideas that are top of my list:
Friday Night:
I’m only going to recommend one event tonight because this is the only event you should even consider. When Michael T hosts a party you simply must go. This is the man who did the best cover at the Bowie Ball. The man who wears tuxedos and face powder. The man who inspires a cult following of hipsters and party people. The man who hosts regular panty parties. Tonight he’ll be at APT hosting “The Horrific Return of Tattler.” My friend Fucci will be spinning and if you tell them at the door that you’re there for Fucci the cover is only $5. Be there. Be fabulous.

Saturday Daytime:
Your first challenge on Saturday, if you aren’t planning something romantic, is to find a good brunch spot that also isn’t planning something romantic. I am the queen of brunch, it is my favorite meal, not to mention a NYC institution. K and I will be having a lovely platonic brunch at Elizabeth, which boasts not only a delicious brunch menu but also a year-round garden.

You can also check out those of my favorite brunch spots that have not succumbed to the madness:
- Jane– charming, classic, the Eggs Benedict is lust worthy.
- 5 Points– mmm… pitchers of bloody marys!
- Resto– Belgian beer and Belgian waffles and Belgian chocolate
Post-brunch I recommend checking out some of the amazing vintage stores in the LES; with every non-single person otherwise occupied you’ll have the 60s bell-bottoms and 50s heels all to yourselves. New York Magazine has this (fairly) comprehensive LIST. I particularly recommend Yumi Kim for a good mix of old and new.
Saturday Night:
I would like to make one addition to my previous post, file this under “Angry Events;” the Warehouse Party at Refuge will be a “Valentine’s Day Riot” including Brooklyn’s own Theophilus London live, the sexy Roxy Cottontail and the totally rad Dances With White Girls. As if that wasn’t enough there will also be an enticing kissing booth, live performance art and installations by The Lowbrow Society for the Arts, true bittersweet candy hearts, dirty prizes and naughty giveaways.
Sunday:
Take this day for sleeping and basking in the knowledge that you have a whole extra day of weekend yet to come. Stay out later than usual Sunday night at KGB Bar for a fiction reading with Jonathan Baumbach and Paul Mamont. Or go over to Film Forum to see Our City of Dreams, a movie about 5 female artists working in NYC. And if you’re a music nerd you should be in Greenpoint checking out the merchandise at the Brooklyn Record Riot featuring more than 35 record dealers, DJs spinning and plenty of kielbasa and Polish beer at Warsaw.
Monday:
I for one hope to check out those photography exhibits I told you about recently and maybe even squeeze in another Oscar movie. If I hear about more events I’ll add them asap! Please let me know if you have anything to share!
